What is the Leisure Strategy?

Derby's Leisure Strategy is a plan that proposes the most exciting and important changes to leisure in Derby in the last 40 years.

Development of the Leisure Strategy will place Derby firmly on the sporting map and will provide residents with the new and modern facilities to be proud of.

Our exisiting facilities have served us well for a number of years but are now in poor condition with a maintenance bill that would run into many millions of pounds.

The indoor and outdoor hubs will become beacons of excellence in the city and will form the focal point of regeneration at the sites eventually identified for development.

What are the proposed sports facilities?

Two large sporting 'hubs' will be the centre of the proposed sports facilities, with smaller community facilities based across the city.

Indoor Hub

This facility will offer a 50m swimming pool with spectator areas, health and wellbeing facilities, lifestyle advice services and sports activity areas.

For examples of indoor hub facilities, visit:

Grand Central Pools - Stockport

Manchester Aquatics Centre

Dollan Aqua Centre - East Kilbride.

The Multi-Sports Arena Hub

This facility will offer a 250m indoor cycle race track, and a flexible space which can be used as 10 to 12 court spaces or for a 3,000 to 4,000 audience concert venue or exhibition space.

For examples of multi-sports arena facilities, visit:

National Cycling Centre - Manchester

Apeldoorn Cycle Track - Holland

London's Velodrome - opened February 2011.

Neighbourhood sports facilities

Swimming and sports centres to be based in the north, south, east and west of Derby. These will be extended versions of existing facilities such as Springwood Leisure Centre.

Network facilities

These facilities will serve local neighbourhoods, including existing school and community facilities.

What happens next?

In the next three months we will be:

  • preparing detailed technical specification and accommodation requirements.
  • consulting with local clubs, current facility users and National Governing Bodies.
  • deciding the most appropriate route to build the hubs.
  • updating the Leisure Strategy newsletter and this page.
