Derby. A city for all ages

Arts and Events in Derby

The Arts Team's work involves:

  • Speaking on behalf of the Council about Arts and Events in Derby and beyond
  • Advocating for the arts and their benefits
  • Helping to ensure the quality of arts provision
  • Fostering the inclusivity of arts provision and ensuring access to high-quality arts for all
  • Pointing people in the right direction for more detailed help and advice
  • Offering advice and support to artists, arts organisations and arts businesses, particularly about funding opportunities
  • Talking to members of Derby's arts community to draw up plans to help them work together
  • Helping to get arts funding to set up new activities

The Council is very concerned about the current difficulties at the Derby Playhouse, an organisation that the Council has provided funding for for many years. However the Council and the Arts and Events Team are committed to making sure that produced theatre has a home in Derby in the future. We will work with Arts Council England to make this happen.

Achievements of the Arts and Events Team in 2007

The 2006/2007 figures for arts activity in Derby show that:

  • The total audience for activities supported through the Council's Arts and Events service was 504,445. This is equivalent to twice Derby's total population.
  • There were 9,151 arts events in the city supported through the Council's Arts and Events service. It would take over 25 years to attend all these events at the rate of 1 a day.
  • 2,921 artists were employed for a total of 11,705 days. A considerable contribution to Derby's economy.
  • Investment of £1,080,444 from DCC Arts and Events resulted in activity with a value of £8,233,274. This means that every £1 of Local Authority funding levered in an additional £7 of revenue to the city from other sources.
  • There were 1,650 individual performances in the city supported through the Council's Arts and Events service.
  • There were 2,677 exhibition days - equivalent to over 7 years of continuous exhibition.
  • There were 4,824 sessions for education and/or training in which 66,860 people took part.

Note – the above figures do not include audience figures for the Assembly Rooms and Guildhall Theatre; in 2006/07 these were 272,379.
