Business Advice

We aim to create a fair and safe trading environment for consumers and businesses in Derby. We do this by working with businesses to help them comply with the law.

What advice can I get from you?

  • Food standards - food additives, allergens, food product labelling and durability dates, more commonly known as 'best before' or 'use by' dates.
  • Product safety - toys, furniture, clothing, electrical items and age restricted goods such as alcohol, tobacco, knives, butane, explosives and solvents.
  • Weights and measures - weighing and measuring equipment in use for trade such as weighbridges, petrol pumps, spirit measuring instruments and weighing instruments.
  • Fair trading - distance selling (selling goods and services by catalogue, over the phone or on the Internet), door step selling, pricing, consumer credit, package holidays, timeshare and civil law.
  • Animal health and welfare - movement of farm animals, control and prevention of the spread of diseases, cleansing and disinfection and the health and well-being of farm animals.
  • Age Restricted Products - legislation relating to age restricted products such as tobacco, alcohol, aerosols, knives, firearms and fireworks
  • Consumer Rights - advice about consumers' rights and legislation that retailers and traders should be aware of.

Salt Aware Scheme

To become a 'Salt Aware Butcher', butchers need to produce sausages using a recipe capable of meeting the recommended salt targets of 1.4g salt per 100g product.

Some butchers sausages may already meet this criteria, but if not, you can use this guidance to help you reduce salt levels in order to meet the targets and become a Salt Aware Butcher.

To help our local butchers produce healthier sausages, you can use the Butchers calculator to:

  • reduce salt levels in your sausages
  • help your customers reduce their salt intake
  • potentially increase your sales and customers and
  • possibly save money on production costs.
