  • I hear so many horror stories about rogue traders, con-men and bodge jobs. Are there any traders out there I can trust?

    Yes. We might hear more about the rogues but there are plenty of good, reliable, honest tradesmen around. The Buy with Confidence scheme has been set up to help consumers find those good traders.

  • What is Buy with Confidence?

    Buy with Confidence is an approved trader's scheme which promotes fair trading by focusing on the businesses that get it right.  Buy with Confidence gives consumers the confidence to pick an approved trader they can trust.

  • Who runs the Buy with Confidence scheme?

    The scheme is run locally by our Trading Standards team. Many other local authorities have a Buy with Confidence scheme which is the largest national approved trader scheme in the country.

  • What types of businesses are included in the scheme?

    There are all sorts of traders and businesses in our Buy with Confidence scheme, including plumbers, electricians, builders, garages, cleaners, window fitters, and many more.

  • What checks are carried out on Buy with Confidence members?

    In order to become a member of Buy with Confidence, businesses are checked for their commitment to customer service and compliance with consumer protection law.

    We do this by carrying out the following checks...

    • Review of local and national Trading Standards databases for complaints
    • Credit checks
    • Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) checks
    • Audit of paperwork, terms and conditions, and websites
    • Checking of references.
  • How do I find a trader through the Buy with Confidence scheme?

    Go to www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk, type in your postcode and the type of business you are looking for (for example 'plumber') you will then be given details of local Buy with Confidence members based near you.

    If you don't have access to the internet, telephone our Buy with Confidence team on 01332 642424. Tell us what kind of business you're looking for. We'll then check the system for you and give you the details of the approved traders in your local area.

  • Most reputable traders are only interested in big projects. How can I find a trader who will to do a small job?

    Businesses that are happy to do jobs for under £75 are clearly marked on the Buy with Confidence website as 'small job friendly'. The majority of our Buy with Confidence members are happy to take on small jobs.

  • How can I complain about a business who is a member of Buy with Confidence?

    Members of the Buy with Confidence scheme are required to deal with complaints in a fair and equitable manner. If you unhappy about a business, a member of staff or the work they have done, you should first complaint to the business using their complaints procedure.

    If the matter is still not resolved, contact the Citizens Advice Bureau on 03454 04 05 06.

  • Can I recommend a tradesman or business?

    Yes please!  The scheme in Derby is steadily growing but we are always looking for more good traders to be invited to join Buy with Confidence. If you know a good trader please contact us to recommend them. We will then contact the business and invite them to apply.

  • Is Buy with Confidence free?

    It is free to use Buy with Confidence tod find an approved trader. Members pay an annual fee which is put towards the cost of running the scheme. 


  • What if a trader knocks on my door saying he is Trading Standards approved?

    Be very suspicious! We advise you never to buy from or agree to have work done by anyone who calls at the door.
