Markets - ‘Be Your Own Boss'

Our 'Be Your Own Boss' scheme is designed to give you all the help you need to set up as a first time market trader. Supported by the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF), we are offering you the opportunity to start your own retail business in a prime city centre location.

This offer applies to business premises in the Market Hall, subject to there being a variety of goods for customers and to stall letting for a minimum of a year.

When you start your own business in one of our markets, you will be surrounded by experienced market traders who will be happy to offer advice and support.


What support will I receive on the 'Be Your Own Boss' scheme?

You will receive a 50% rent reduction for the first seven months on a fixed 12 month tenancy agreement. You will also be allowed to trade for five days rent free. (Please note that if you end your tenancy before the 12 month period you will need to pay back any rent reduction that you have received. Service charge and rates will still apply.)

How much does it cost to join the scheme?

You can join the scheme for as little as £112, including the following great benefits:

  • a year’s NMTF membership (worth £102)
  • liability’s insurance (public, product and employers)
  • a copy of NMTF First - a practical guide and advice for those setting up as a trader (worth £100). The guide was developed with retail experts, The Retail Group
  • advice and support from the NMTF by telephone

Who can apply?

Anyone over the age of 18 who is interested in starting their own business and being their own boss.

Which stalls are currently available to rent?

To find out what is currently available at Derby Markets you can download our latest vacancies for the Market Hall. Our vacancy lists provide you with details of vacant Market units, their location within the Market and full rent, service charge figures and an estimated rates charge. Alternatively, you can contact us and we will send you details and an application form.

How do I apply?

  1. Download an application form for the Market Hall along with a Direct Debit Mandate formbank reference form and the Derby Markets Terms and Conditions.
  2. Apply for one of the units through the ‘Be Your Own Boss’ scheme for the Markets Team to consider your application. Completed forms can be posted to Markets Team, Derby Market Hall, Tenant Street, Derby, DE1 2DB.
  3. If your application gains initial approval you will be provisionally offered a stall (subject to a financial reference) and be referred to sign up with the National Market Traders Federation. They can be contacted on 01226 749021.
  4. The NMTF will advise Derby City Council of your membership and you will be formally offered a stall by Derby City Council on the ‘Be Your Own Boss’ scheme upon payment of a month’s deposit and signed formal agreement. We will look forward to welcoming you as a trader in our city centre market.

Offer conditions

Derby City Council has the right to refuse any application, vary terms and cancel the offer at any time. Financial references will be taken for applicants. Although established traders can not apply for the Derby City Council seven months 50% rent reduction and 'Be Your Own Boss' scheme, we would accept applications from established traders who wish to relocate to one of our city centre market retail units. Full rent, rates and service charge fees apply but often market retail unit charges are much less than those for units in other city centre retail locations. Units can cost as little as £307 a month for the rent, rates and service charge. It can be less than this if you are eligible for rates relief.
