Councillor Barker was first elected to represent Oakwood Ward in 2010, having been one of the first families to move to the Oakwood estate in 1979. In the time since, he has witnessed the area grow to become one of the largest private housing estates in Europe.
During his time as a local councillor Mick has amassed significant experience as a Vice Chair of the Licensing Committee, presiding over countless taxi and general licensing sub committee hearings. In recent years, Councillor Barker has also served as a Vice Chair of the Personnel Committee and the Supporting Derby's Workforce Overview and Scrutiny Board.
Mick is a retired Police Officer, having served for 34 years throughout Derbyshire, spending the last five years of his career in Westminster advising parliamentarians on law relating to all aspects of policing.
