Store bins off the street
Your responsibilities
You are responsible for presenting your waste properly and for removing bins from the street after collection (unless you have an assisted collection in place). Bins cannot be permanently stored on the pavement. Bins on pavements are a hazard, can become misused by passersby leading to them not being emptied, and look an eyesore.
Bins should be presented no earlier than 5pm the evening before, or by 6:30am on collection day. To check when your bin day is, or for which bin to present, see the When is my bin day? page.
In tight, narrow streets especially, we need your help to enable us to access your home with our lorry and empty bins on the correct day. Help us access your street by parking with consideration, do not park on junctions. If your street is blocked preventing us from emptying bins on the advertised day, we will return so leave your bin available for collection.
If you think your bin has been missed boy the collection team, check first there was not an issue preventing collection. Genuine missed bins can be reported online.
Bins must be taken off the street by noon the day after collection or you may receive a Fixed Penalty Notice. If you are currently storing your bins on the streets you need to take steps to avoid enforcement action.
Private homes
If you have outdoor storage space, you are responsible for removing bins from the street in-between collections. You need to take action to resolve any issues preventing you from using or accessing your outdoor storage space. This may include taking civil action to resolve access issues. Storing bins on the street is not a suitable alternative.
If there appears to be no defined storage space for your bins within your property boundary, please contact us.
Rented accommodation
If you rent your home, you are liable for removing bins from the street in-between collections and must store bins within the boundary of the property. If you are encountering issues, for example, locked gated alleyways or issues with accessing storage space, you need to speak to your landlord or letting agency to resolve these, civil action may be required. Failure to do so may lead to enforcement actions against the occupants of the property.

Multi-occupancy homes
Normally, multi-occupancy homes (HMOs and flats) will have an identified storage space for shared bins somewhere within the property boundary. If the access is suitable, bin collection teams will usually collect and return bins to this point. If not, it is the residents responsibility to present and return the bins - storing bins on the street is not an acceptable alternative. All occupants are responsible for any non-compliance, so it is in your interest to resolve any issues.
If there are issues preventing you from accessing bin storage, contact your landlord, letting or management agency.
