The Connected Cycle City & Placemaking (CCC+P) programme plays an integral part to inspire confidence by users, businesses and investors of the city centre.
Placemaking is a very important aspect of the economic development of a city. It involves improvements to and maintaining the quality of the 'public realm' - that is any publicly owned streets, pathways, right of ways, parks, publicly accessible open spaces and facilities.
To deliver our City Centre Masterplan 2030; we will be investing in the public realm (placemaking) to create an enhanced built environment with attractive streets and high quality walking and cycling routes as we know that successful city centres drive local and national economies, and that quality public realm creates environments that people want to live and work in.
Well-designed, high-quality urban spaces have an economic value with the potential to influence investment decisions and consumer behaviour. Studies have shown that investments in improving urban spaces (placemaking) increase footfall between 20% to 40% and retail turnover between 10% and 25%.
Up to 2016, we have delivered the first two of seven projects which were makeovers of St Peter's Cross and The Spot. The first was funded entirely from the Council's budget while The Spot was co-funded by the Council and D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.
In 2017, our priorities are the links between the World Heritage Site (St Alkmunds Bridge) and the Spot as well between intu and the Market Hall.
Priorities also include cycle access routes along St Peter's Street, Albion Street, Exchange Street and East Street before 10am and after 5pm. We will also be installing more seating, litter bins, street lighting, summer flower baskets, cycle parking, slightly raised platforms to provide a ‘tapping edge’ for blind and partially sighted people and a 'Walk of Fame' to celebrate the people of Derby.
The cost of the remaining phases is £1.9m of which £1.65m is provided by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership and £250,000 from the Council.
