Abandoned vehicles

If you believe that a vehicle has been abandoned, you can report it to the council so we can investigate and remove it, if appropriate.

An untaxed vehicle may not be an indication of abandonment. We will inspect the vehicle and make an assessment of the risk.

What is an abandoned vehicle?

Generally a vehicle would need to be at least 1 month out of tax and in the same location for 4 weeks. The investigating council officer will look at all the individual circumstances in reaching a decision.

How do I report an abandoned vehicle?

To report an abandoned vehicle you will need to provide:

  1. the road name and location of the vehicle
  2. the registration number
  3. make, model and colour
  4. your contact details

We would aim to remove a hazardous vehicle as soon as possible.

We will not be able to remove all other vehicles immediately, however we will aim to investigate within 3 days of being notified.

We cannot tell you the outcome of our investigations or who owns the vehicle and there may be occasions when vehicles are reported as abandoned but that we are unable to remove.
