How to identify them
- The most common ant species that invades homes and businesses is the black garden ant, which is actually very dark brown.
- The foraging worker ants invade buildings in search of food.
- These are usually 3 to 5mm in length and are attracted to sweet foodstuffs which they take back to the nest to feed to the larvae and queen.
- A less common species, the pharaoh ant can also invade British homes - these tend to be smaller and lighter coloured than the common garden ant and prefer to nest in warm, dark areas such as boiler cupboards allowing them to remain active all year round.
How are they treated?
We don't treat residential infestations, however a good first-aid solution is to pour boiling water over the nest entrance. Several shops also sell ant-specific powders and sprays which can be used outdoors. Baits containing Borax are also available.
It is also important to remove potential food sources by ensuring that food waste is properly disposed of.
