Local Area Coordination

Derby City Council first introduced Local Area Coordination (LAC) in 2012 commencing the service in two wards in the city. The aim of LAC is to support residents in the local community to ‘get a life, not a service’, empowering individuals to find community based solutions instead of relying on services. Further information about the service can be found on our Local Area Coordination page.

Since its launch in 2012, LAC has gradually been rolled out across more of Derby so that, in 2018, Local Area Coordinators are working in 10 wards within the city. More than 1,400 people have been supported since the service began, including more than 750 people with more complex needs. At any point in time, Local Area Coordinators are now supporting approximately 400 people within the city.

In 2015, a Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis of Derby's LAC was commissioned by Think Local Act Personal (TLAP). The findings were published in March 2016 and found that for every £1 invested in the service, £4 of social value is created. This 400% 'social return on investment' evidence is now being used to consider further expansion of the service to all 17 council wards.
