Equality and diversity‌

Equality Framework logo Stonewall top 100 employers Disability Confident Employer

We are proud of our approach to equality and diversity in employment and in recruitment and selection - this is demonstrated in our Equality, Dignity and Respect policy - 2017.

We want our workforce to be as diverse as the community we live in at all our levels and we welcome job applications from all sections of our community. Search our vacancies to see if there is a job that appeals to you and then look at the person specification to see if the job is right for you.

The essential requirements are listed on the person specification.

If you join us as an employee we can guarantee that equality and diversity lies at the heart of all our work and is embraced by each and every directorate.

Guaranteed interview scheme for disabled people‌

We are committed to employing disabled people and have earned the Disability Confident Employer status form JobCentre Plus. We guarantee an interview to disabled people who want one if they meet the essential requirements of the job.

We realise that some disabled people may not want a guaranteed interview. If this applies to you, the choice is entirely yours.

If you do want to apply under the guaranteed interview scheme, please tell us by filling in the relevant section of the job application form.

Reasonable adjustments

We will make reasonable adjustments for disabled people both during the recruitment process and in the job itself.

For example, you may need a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter at interview or you may need us to consider removing a particular job requirement, such as the need for a driving licence.

Please tell us what adjustments you need by filling in the relevant section of the job application form. If you are unable to complete our online application form, please get in touch and we will give you the application form in another way that will help you access it.

Disability equality at work

We encourage our disabled employees to fill in a Disability Equality at Work form so we can do all we can to make sure reasonable adjustments are made.

We also have disability leave for disabled employees to take time out of work to attend appointments or treatment related to their impairment.

Stonewall Diversity Champions‌

From 2010 to 2014 we were Stonewall Diversity Champions, and secured a top 45 ranking each year in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index top 100 employers.

Despite no longer being members of the Diversity Champions Scheme, we still work to the principles of the Equality Index.

Our employees take part in events such as Derby Pride, International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia and LGBT History Month.

Employee support networks

Employee networks offer help, advice and support in a friendly and safe environment. The networks help us remove any barriers to employment, service delivery and help us promote equality and diversity at the Council.

We have three employee support networks:

  • BESN - Black Employees Support Network
  • DEN - Disabled Employees Network
  • LGBT Employees Network - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender.

The networks help us organise equality themed events such Black History Season, Show Racism the Red Card, National Interfaith Week and many more.
