Derby’s new students deserve a warm welcome to the city

Derby’s new students deserve a warm welcome to the city and what better ways than to take part in activities which won’t use up the whole student loan in one go?!

Just across the road from the University of Derby’s Kedleston Road campus is Markeaton Park’s Mundy Play Centre, which houses the new mini golf course, which is just £2.60 for nine holes.

If some healthy competition is your thing, also over at Markeaton Park, but a little further up from the campus is FootGolf and Disc Golf which won’t break the bank at £6.00 a round.

The city is home to Derby Arena, which is has an Olympic-sized indoor cycling track. Wanting to bond with your new friends? Is there really a better way than on the adrenaline-filled velodrome track? There are taster sessions and accreditation sessions which will get you flying round the track in no time!

Along with Derby Arena, Derby Active has two other leisure centres: Queen’s in the city centre and Springwood in Oakwood. All three have gyms where you can squat, curl, run, cycle and there’s special membership deal for where you get the gym, swim and classes at a discounted rate of £23.25 a month. During September, Students can take advantage of the ‘Join for a Coin’ offer too.

Derby Arena and Springwood, and Moorways Stadium have a number of courts and pitches to hire where you can play squash, football, badminton, table tennis and more!

Nicely situated in the city centre and near a lot of halls of residence is Queen’s Leisure Centre, which is has three pools. There is plenty of opportunity for regular lane swimming, although if you’re after something a little more exciting then head to the Gala Pool when the Atlantis Splash Run inflatable is in the pool.

Full-time students are entitled to a concessionary leisure card which gives up to 40% discount on certain activities including swimming and the hire of some courts, so it’s definitely worth having popping into a centre to get one as it’ll reduce the cost of a swim to £2.80.
