The sessions offer a creative way to increase language skills.

The Council’s Adult Learning service has teamed up with Derby QUAD to launch a new project to engage with communities where English is a second language through creative activities. The ‘Make, Learn, Share, Teach’ project is funded to help local authorities meet the English language needs of their communities, meeting learning and communication needs through creative learning and cultural exchange. The free sessions offer a creative way for those wishing to increase language skills in a fun and informal environment.

Each session will focus on practical activities including; cooking and sharing recipes, stories, photography and filmmaking, sculpture and textiles. Those taking part will be encouraged to share their culinary and creative skills with others while improving their confidence in using English.

The free sessions will take place via Zoom on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 11.00am to 12.15pm, from Tuesday 5 January to Thursday 25 February 2021. The sessions are open to anyone aged nineteen and above, all levels of ability in English are encouraged.

In January, 'Cooking with English' is a chance to learn to cook new recipes while practising your English and improving your vocabulary. You can share your favourite recipe and make a short film so that others can learn how to make your favourite dish!

In February, 'Storytelling with Photography and Filmmaking' is chance to learn photography and filmmaking as you improve your English. Tell your story with a short film, during our world famous, Format Photography Festival in March.

In March, 'Sculpture/Textiles' are sessions to make a table lamp from start to finish using recycled materials and textiles.
