Early Years and Nursery Education

Even before starting school, children should start to learn the knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible road users. Research shows that attitudes towards road safety are formed when children are very young making this an ideal time to start teaching road safety.

Children should start to learn about the language of the road, becoming familiar with words and their meanings. They should also start learning about right and wrong behaviour - for example; holding hands, safe places to play, child seats and seatbelts, crossing the road and the importance of stop, look and listen. To help you make a start we have put together some materials for you to use.

Child car seats – ‘Check it, don’t chance it’

Warning: over 70% of child car seats checked in Derby are either not suitable or not fitted correctly.

The law states that children up to the age of 12 or 135cm in height must use an appropriate child restraint when travelling in any vehicle.

We have produced a leaflet to help people avoid the most common mistakes when fitting their child’s car seat. There are also a number of short films that give information about choosing and fitting a child car seat correctly as well as explaining the legal requirements.. Alternatively, use the online booking form if you would like to receive our ‘Parents Guide to Child Car Seats’ (DVD included) FREE and direct to your door.

I-Size car seats

A new type of car seat has been introduced called the ‘i-size’. Following the introduction of a new regulation (Reg: 129) a new sizing system has been agreed and will be slowly introduced over the coming years. For further information about i-size please read our i-size information.
