Derby City Council has contracted local construction firm Bowmer + Kirkland to build Derby’s new 50m pool and water park to create Moorways Sports Village.

Work began on site last November and Bowmer + Kirkland will start construction in the coming weeks. When built the facilities will include a 50m pool, water park, learner pool, and soft play alongside a comprehensive health and fitness offer.

Councillor Robin Wood, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said:

The main construction contract has been signed. A lot of work is set to take place on the site and we can look forward to Derby’s new pool and water park being built over the next two years.

Steve Chambers, Bowmer + Kirkland Regional Director, said:

We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this contract to build Moorways Sports Village. After forging an excellent relationship with the council during our construction of Derby Arena, we are looking forward to working with them for the construction of this exciting new addition to the leisure facilities in the city.

The water park will have plenty of thrills with two four storey flumes along with England’s first wave generating WOW ball and wave rider slide. More fun can be had with the dual racer slides and a beach water playground area with mini slides and water jets for families.

Innovative technology will be used to provide a flexible swimming space. The 50m pool can be transformed into three separate pools in matter of minutes providing opportunities to put on different activities at the same time. A separate learner pool will provide an excellent environment for swimmers of all ages to have lessons.

The modern gym will be kitted out with the latest equipment in addition to the three studios for a comprehensive health and fitness experience. Visitors will be able to relax in the sauna and steam rooms, after a swim or workout.

A Café offering a range of refreshments will be located on the ground floor as well as a soft play area for kids.

Moorways Sports Village will be a comprehensive leisure destination offering residents a great experience and attracting visitors from further afield.

Derby City Council has already approved £42 million to deliver the project and the construction. The build is scheduled to be completed by late 2021.
