Derby City Council to resume birth registration service

One of the measures taken by Government during the coronavirus pandemic was to suspend the registration of new births. As a result, most of the babies born since March have not been registered.

From today, customers can book an appointment to register a birth.

Changes have been made to Royal Oak House to ensure it is COVID secure with strict guidance in place to ensure the safety of staff and customers, including staggered appointments and no waiting room inside. Entry will be by appointment only.

Between now and Saturday 1 August the service will prioritise appointments for those children born before Monday 1 June. Booking can be arranged online on the Derby City Council website or on 01332 640000 or online. Bookings can also be made for those born after this date where a birth certificate is required for urgent travel or other urgent needs.

For births that occurred after Monday 1 June, appointments can be made from Saturday 1 August.

As well as births a limited number of Notice of Marriage appointments will also be available from Monday 13 July.

For those whose wedding ceremony is booked for 2021, we are asking couples to delay their Notice of Marriage appointment until after Thursday 1 October in order to help us prioritise those ceremonies booked for 2020.

I’m delighted we’re able to get this service back up and running for the people of Derby. It’s another small step back to normality and I know will be a relief to new parents and to couples wanting to plan their weddings. We’ll clearly have a backlog of registrations to work through as well as restrictions on numbers due to the safety measures in place at Royal Oak House and other council buildings, so we do need to ask for people’s patience as we work through cases.
