Derby Retro and Classic Car Show is a triumph

Crowds of motor enthusiasts from across the region flocked to the Derby Retro and Classic Car Show on Sunday 2 July. Markeaton Park became a sunny vibrant hub where hundreds of attendees revelled in the harmonious blend of music, delectable refreshments, delightful ice cream treats, and, above all, the stunning display of automobiles.

The showcase of exquisite automotive designs, encompassing elegant classics, tastefully modified vehicles, and timeless traditional motors, could be seen. Surrounded by an such impressive array of automobiles, you couldn't help but be captivated by the luxurious elegance of the 1959 Cadillac, while simultaneously admiring the adventurous spirit embodied by the Mini Monster Truck.

The day concluded with an awards ceremony for several categories. The judging was done by our partner, Lee Perry Custom & Classics all throughout the day.

The Rust and Grime Award was awarded to the owner of a Chevrolet 3100, the pick-up truck outperformed the competition by a wide margin by catching the judges' attention with its distinctive and appealing appearance! The Best Paintwork Award went to a pearly white VW Caddy Pickup truck. The exterior, interior, and engine block were all in pristine condition and gleamed throughout, drawing a lot of attention from the crowd. Best in Show was awarded to the owner of a stunning White 1959 Cadillac, at 63 years old this Cadillac could still turn heads!

Winning the award for the Best Pre-60s car was a 1921 Ford Model T even with its whopping 20 horsepower. The Best 1960s award was rightfully claimed by the owner of a classic green and white VW Split screen camper van. A cool red Daimler Coupe took home the prize for Best 1970s Car.

Winning the prize for Best 1980s was a Mini Monster Truck, small but packs a punch with its unique style and details all over the vehicle. The Best 1990s award was taken by the Escort RS Cosworth originally designed to qualify for the world rally championships.

The Best Motorcycle was awarded to an excellent orange Laverda 750 and The Best Trike was awarded to a fiery orange Bond Bug. Finally, a white Renault 5 turbo won Best Interior with its blue finish and subwoofer in the rear to provide an incredible sound system.

While visitors explored the incredible collection of vehicles, live bands and DJs kept the crowd entertained, bringing a happy, upbeat mood to the day. Hannah Fay, the Local Vocal Community Choir, Miss Franny De Light and The Ricky and the Retros all brought their own unique styles to the stage ultimately giving the day a summery, festival-like feel.

Alongside the music and wheels was family-friendly entertainment including a lively funfair and thrilling inflatables, and a fully licensed bar for the adults!

Markeaton Park also saw children enjoying performances of The Magic Story Book in the Craft Village, just a stone’s throw away from the Retro and Classic Car Show, as the event coincided with the start of the Outdoor Theatre and Cinema Season. Other park amenities enjoyed by visitors included the Paddling Pool, Mini Golf and much more.
