Overview of support
When you turn 18 we do not stop caring about you, we want to support and help you to make a positive transition into adulthood.
We know that it is a big step when you reach 18 and are entering adulthood. As a care experienced young person, how you are supported may look different to what you experienced as a child our aim is that this offer will show you what your support may look like now that you are over 18.
We have created this Local Offer for our care experienced young people in line with The Children and Social Work Act 2017 to provide information about all the support and services that is available to care experienced young people who were in the care of Derby City Council as a child, regardless of where you are currently living.
You will have an allocated personal advisor until your 21st birthday. In the months leading to your 21st birthday, your personal advisor will meet with you to discuss what your support after your birthday will look like. It could be that you are no longer allocated a personal advisor and can access the Leaving Care Service through our drop-in sessions or advice line.
At any point until your 25th birthday you can access support, advice and information from the Leaving Care Service. Whilst our formal offer of support ends when you reach 25, our care does not and we welcome you to return to the service after you 25th birthday if there is anything that we can support with.
To receive some or all the support set out in this local offer, you must have been in care for a period of at least 13 weeks (or periods amounting to 13 weeks), which began after age 14 and included some time after your 16th birthday. If you are not sure whether you can receive support, you can contact the Leaving Care team or speak to your social worker.
This Local Offer is relevant for all Derby City Council care experienced young people up to the age of 25 regardless of your circumstances. The offer available to you will not depend on where you live, even if you are currently in custody or live outside of Derby city. It will also not depend on whether you are in employment or education or whether you have an EHCP. It will not depend on whether you have children of your own. We genuinely want to continue to support you and champion you regardless of your current circumstances, your goals are our goals and we want to help you to achieve these.
Derby city’s care experienced young people have been consulted with regards to the offer and this offer will be published and reviewed annually. We welcome the participation of our young people in their pathway plans as well as engagement with our forum to review the service we provide so we can continually improve as well as review our offer to our care experienced young people.
