One of Derby’s major commuter routes has been selected for further active travel upgrades, with surveys planned for January.
Spondon Island, where Derby Road meets the A52, will undergo overnight surveys in January.
The information gathered in these surveys will help develop a future improvement scheme for the junction that would have improved journey times and active travel options at its heart.
This future scheme would complement other recent works on the route to link Spondon and Chaddesden with the city centre and employment sites around Raynesway.
Funding from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) has been made available to support the development of this scheme and to enable the initial surveys to take place.
The survey works have been scheduled to take place at night to minimise disruption and will avoid key events in the city. The A52 into the Derby will not be affected.
Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport and Sustainability, said:
It’s great to be look to the future and schemes that can help support more people to make their journeys on foot, by bike. We are only at the start of the process, but this work will help us develop strong proposals that will give the people of Derby more transport choices.
“I’m grateful to EMCCA for their commitment to improving travel and transport in Derby, and helping us become a greener, more mobile city.
Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, said:
I am pleased that Spondon Island is on the way to being better connected to everything that Derby has to offer. People in this region want to have different options for how they get about, and these upgrades will give people in Spondon the choice of better and safer active travel. The continued investment in Derby’s infrastructure is helping us build a cleaner, more accessible future for Derby residents, and this is something to celebrate.
