Plans are moving forward to create a new crematorium for Derby that will provide a place of dignity and respect for years to come.

At the next Cabinet Meeting on Wednesday 8 October, Members will be asked to approve funding for the design stage of a new crematorium to replace the current building at Markeaton.

Markeaton Crematorium, which opened in 1956, has served the community for nearly 70 years and is a crucial community asset, serving residents at an important time in their lives. At the heart of the decision to build a new crematorium is the commitment to ensuring that the Council continues to offer a high-quality service that supports residents for years to come.

Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, Cabinet Member for Streetpride, Parks, and Leisure, said:

Markeaton Crematorium has been an important part of Derby life for almost seven decades, serving residents at moments of great personal significance. We want to ensure that our city continues to have a place of dignity and respect that supports people when they need it most. By working together with our partners and residents, we will create a modern and sustainable crematorium that can serve Derby for many years to come.

Creating a new crematorium is about more than replacing an ageing building. It is about providing a service that supports families and loved ones when they need it most. Our ambition is to build a space that reflects dignity and respect, while offering modern, accessible, and sustainable facilities that meet the needs of our whole community.

The Council explored the option of refurbishing the current building, however concluded that would cause a high level of disruption to services and come with significant limitations. Developing a new crematorium, on the land adjacent to the existing building, was found to be the most effective and sustainable way to secure a long-term, high-quality service which maintains an important connection with the original site’s memorials and gardens.

As part of the Council’s commitment to caring for the environment, the new crematorium will be designed with sustainability in mind. The aim is to reduce carbon emissions  by utilising modern advancements in infrastructure and technology,  helping to protect Derby’s environment for the future.

In February 2025,  budget was allocated within the Council’s Medium Term Financial Plan to deliver a new crematorium on a previously identified site on council land. At the upcoming Cabinet meeting, members will be asked to approve a budget of up to £889,501 to fund the initial design stage, split across two years.

If approved, the next step will be to appoint a contractor to lead the design process, which will be carried out in consultation with residents and partners. This is to ensure the new crematorium reflects the needs and values of the community . Once the design has been finalised, Cabinet will review the full cost plan before construction begins.
