Cabinet will be asked to accept more than £20m of Pride in Place investment at the next Cabinet meeting on 11 February, including £1.5million to improve Derby City Centre and longer-term funding to support community-led regeneration.

The proposals come as part of the Government’s Pride in Place strategy, which aims to strengthen local communities, revitalise neighbourhoods and increase local pride through long-term, community-led investment.

As part of the proposals for Derby, Cabinet will be asked to approve two funding streams:

  • The Pride in Place Impact Fund (PiPIF) which would provide £1.5m to support improvements in the city centre
  • The Pride in Place Programme (PiPP) which would provide a longer-term investment of up to £10 million over 10 years to regenerate areas most in need, starting with Chaddesden West.

If approved the PiPIF would be used to support improvements that inspire pride and potential of public places in the city centre. The core objectives of the fund are to invest in community facilities, enhance public spaces, and create attractive and welcoming high streets. The funding would align with Derby’s emerging Public Realm Strategy which sets out plans to create a more vibrant and inclusive city. The initial phases of the Public Realm Strategy could be implemented through the Pride in Place Impact Fund.

Cabinet will also be asked to accept £20 million in funding from the Pride in Place Programme, a 10-year investment programme which will complement the PiPIF by supporting long-term regeneration in Chaddesden West and will run from April 2026 to March 2036.

This long-term funding will support local residents to set their priorities and create lasting, positive change. The funding will build stronger communities, create thriving places, and empower people to take back control of their communities. This will be done through community cohesion, create thriving and vibrant high streets with a good range of local amenities, and empowering residents of Chaddesden West to have a say on the future of their community.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Cabinet Member for City Centre, Strategy, Regeneration and Policy, said:

This funding is an incredible opportunity to invest in the places that matter most to our communities, both in the city centre and in Chaddesden West. Through both funding programmes, we can work together to build stronger communities and create thriving places that will help people to feel proud of where they live. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for residents’ voices to be at the centre of change for their communities.

Connecting to the Public Realm Strategy, we’re creating a city that will thrive for everyone with revitalised high streets, stronger communities, and vibrant public spaces.

If approved, a Neighbourhood Board, made up primarily of local residents, alongside community organisations, Catherine Atkinson, Member of Parliament for Derby North, businesses, and public sector partners will be established. Together the Board will set priorities, oversee delivery, and develop a shared 10-year vision for Chaddesden West based on what matters most to the community.

The Board will be led by an independent chair, who will be recruited by Catherine Atkinson, Member of Parliament for Derby North with at least one ward councillor being selected to represent residents’ concerns. Applications for the Chair role are now live on Derby City Council’s website.
