Families can dive into a world of imagination this February half-term with a collection of free events in libraries. From swashbuckling pirate adventures and comic book masterclasses to coding and clay modelling, there is something to inspire children of all ages.
2026 is the National Year of Reading, so there’s no better time to dive into the fun at your local library!
The half-term fun kicks off with Sprout’s Surprise! featuring local author Susan Hughes. Young children (ages 3–7) are invited to help solve the mystery of why Sprout’s tummy is turning green through interactive storytelling and crafts.
The sessions will be at Mickleover Library on Monday 16 February from 2:30pm – 3:30pm and Allestree Library on Thursday 19 February from 10:30am – 11:30am.
Creativity continues at Allestree Library on Tuesday 17 February with a Cheshire Cat Clay Workshop. Hosted by Peacock Craft Barn and funded by the Allestree Neighbourhood Board, children aged 5–16 can create their own mess-free clay version of Lewis Carroll’s famous character to take home. It takes place from 11am until midday.
On Thursday 19 February, aspiring artists can learn from a pro during Kev F’s Comic Art Masterclass. Kev F Sutherland, whose credits include Beano, Doctor Who, and Marvel, will teach children aged 7+ how to draw their own strips. Every participant will leave with a finished comic and an individual caricature by Kev.
The workshops take place at Alvaston Library on Thursday 19 February from 10:30am – 12:30pm, and Mickleover Library on Thursday 19 February from 2pm – 4pm.
Fans of the high seas should head to Mackworth Library on Thursday 19 February for A Pirate Adventure. This swashbuckling session, delivered by Furthest from the Sea Music, Comedy & Arts CIC, features professional storytelling and artist-led activities. Fancy dress is highly encouraged for this event, which is funded by the Mackworth and New Zealand Neighbourhood Board.
Finally, the week wraps up with a focus on technology. On Saturday 21 February, Allestree Library will host a Children’s Coding Workshop with STEMDays.com from 10:30am – midday. Children aged 9–13 can get hands-on experience with Micro:bit computers. For those interested in getting more involved, Derby Libraries also offers ongoing free Code Club courses at Alvaston, Mickleover, Normanton, and Riverside Libraries.
Councillor Sarah Chambers, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Public Safety, said:
Keeping the children entertained during school holidays can be a challenge but our libraries are packed with exciting events this half term. Joining your local library is completely free and opens up a world of books, audiobooks, comics and magazines.
With free membership and year-round activities, there’s always something new to discover. There’s so much to our libraries – they’re a community of stories, where every story is welcome.
All the half-term events are free, but booking is essential as places are limited. Parents can book by calling the relevant library or visiting in person. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
For more information on these events and everything your local library offers, go to the Derby Libraries website.
