Derby City Council’s Derby Promise is kicking off its calendar of events for 2026 with Roots, an exciting afternoon of creative careers inspiration.
Young people aged 14-18 are invited to Electric Daisy on Bold Lane, on Thursday 19 February from 3-6pm to enjoy workshops, talks and taster sessions aimed at inspiring careers in areas as diverse as content creation, videography and illustration.
Roots has been designed as a marketplace, hosting industry professionals who will be present to share their own experiences and career journeys, giving guidance and information about the reality of turning a passion into a career.
Young people will have the opportunity to take part in engaging taster workshops and ask any burning questions about careers in the cultural and creative sector. We are also keen to hear about their aspirations and ideas, any barriers to opportunities that they feel will prevent them from realising their goal, and ways these can be improved upon in the future.
Part of a city-wide partnership, the Derby Promise focuses on supporting young people to dream big and find their career pathway. Events like Roots are one of the ways in which the programme prepares young people for the future, connecting education, industry, culture and community.
Other flagship events to look out for during the year include the popular Summer Festival, which connects children with sports and health-based careers, and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)-focused Festival of Ideas.
Paul Hezelgrave, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Skills said:
It’s important that our young people are encouraged to dream big and shape their future in Derby, and that we meet these dreams with the practical support and guidance needed to see them become reality.
With Roots, the emphasis is on exploring what’s possible – letting young people know that you don’t have to have everything figured out in one go, but whether you’ve got a detailed plan or a vague idea, it’s all worth exploring.
Parents and carers are also invited to stop by, and will be able to receive advice and information from a variety of experts. Representatives from Family Hubs, Derby SAL (Schools Advice Line), Derby’s SEND Parent Carer Forum, and other education, training and support providers will be on hand to chat and give guidance.
