Our local libraries are at the heart of our communities. From lively groups to essential services, they are vibrant community hubs where a team of dedicated volunteers perform a vital role. If you’re looking for a way to give back, Derby Libraries are looking for you. This mission is more vital than ever as 2026 marks the National Year of Reading, a national drive to help everyone from toddlers to seniors rediscover the joy of books.

Former primary school teacher Veronica brought her skills to Springwood Library, where she runs popular preschool story and rhyme sessions. “It’s great to be part of a child’s first experience with books,” she says. “One of the best things is being there for our customers who need a friendly chat or a welcoming smile. I’ve met a whole range of people from the community who I probably wouldn't have met otherwise, and we have all become friends.”

Fellow volunteer Hilary believes the role allows people to use their individual talents to the fullest. “We provide plenty of scope for volunteers to use their skills in lots of ways. If you would like to work with children you could lead Rhymetimes or Lego events; if you’re good at facilitating and fundraising, we’d love you to arrange events. Our fabulous IT volunteers are even helping people access the internet for the first time.”

The impact of this support is life-changing for residents like 80-year-old Cath. Initially overwhelmed by the thought of applying for her bus pass online, Cath worked with Toni, a volunteer at Sinfin Library. Now, Cath confidently uses online banking and does her supermarket shop from her phone.

Cath said: “The volunteers are so patient and made everything easy to understand, especially about staying safe online. I can now do an online shop from an app, which has made life so much easier because my health makes it hard to get to the shops. Now it comes to me!”

Councillor Sarah Chambers, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Public Safety, said:

Our volunteers are the backbone of our library service. Whether helping a resident gain the digital skills to stay independent or fostering a love of reading in the next generation, they make a tangible difference every single day.

As we celebrate the National Year of Reading, there has never been a better time to join this fantastic team and help our communities thrive.”

Library volunteers are asked to commit at least one morning or one afternoon a week. You will be joining a friendly and welcoming team supported by library staff, with full training given. You can find more information about volunteering on the Derby Libraries website.
