A new tree-planting project is set to enhance Knightsbridge Recreation Ground, creating a greener, healthier and more welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
Building on the success of the Council’s highways tree-planting programmes over the past two years, the Parks and Greenspaces team will focus on improving the roadside edge of Knightsbridge Recreation Ground through increased tree cover. The project will see 35 native and climate-resilient trees planted along key routes, helping to create a greener active-travel corridor and encouraging greater use of parkland and access routes into the wider city.
The planting scheme has been developed in line with the Derbyshire Nature Recovery Plan, using a diverse mix of species chosen for their resilience, longevity, seasonal interest and value to wildlife. By combining trees of different sizes, forms and characteristics, the scheme will deliver an immediate visual improvement while laying the foundations for long-term environmental, social and economic benefits.
As the trees mature, they will help improve air quality, reduce surface water run-off and mitigate the effects of urban heat, while also providing valuable habitats for birds, insects and other wildlife. Increased tree cover will also help create a sense of enclosure and security within the park, softening the impact of nearby roads and reducing the potential for unwanted access.
Beyond the environmental benefits, the scheme is expected to support health and wellbeing by encouraging walking, cycling and outdoor activity, while enhancing the overall appearance and enjoyment of the area. Tree-lined parks and routes are also known to contribute positively to local economies by increasing the attractiveness and desirability of surrounding neighbourhoods.
Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport and Sustainability, said:
This tree-planting scheme at Knightsbridge Recreation Ground is about much more than adding greenery. By carefully selecting a diverse mix of native and climate-resilient trees, we’re improving the look and feel of the area while delivering real long-term benefits for residents, wildlife and the wider environment. These new trees will help create a safer, more welcoming space, encourage walking and cycling, and support healthier, more resilient neighbourhoods for years to come.
All planting and aftercare will be carried out in accordance with British Standard 8545:2014 – Trees: from nursery to independence in the landscape, ensuring the trees are given the best possible start and long-term resilience.
Works are scheduled to take place over the next two months, with the team looking forward to seeing the trees emerge from winter dormancy into spring growth and summer colour.
This project represents another step in the council’s ongoing commitment to greener spaces, healthier communities and a more resilient urban environment. Residents are invited to follow the journey as Knightsbridge Recreation Ground grows into a richer, greener landscape for years to come.
