There are just a few days left to take part in Derby City Council’s budget consultation.
The consultation, which closes on Friday 16 January, invites anyone who lives, works or studies in Derby to share their thoughts on proposals for a balanced, responsible budget for 2026/27.
The proposals include a robust three-year Medium-Term Financial Plan (MTFP) from 2026/27 to 2028/29, which features:
- Major investment: £26 million of investment planned for the 2026/27 financial year, with a further £33 million planned over the following two financial years
- Workforce stability: no redundancies or cuts to the Council workforce, with some services receiving investment to grow their teams
- Strategic savings: £7.756 million of proposed savings achieved through continued controls on spending, careful financial management and innovative projects.
Anyone who lives, works, or studies in Derby is encouraged to get involved and share their thoughts on the proposals, which includes around £60 million of investment into essential services over the next three years.
The Government’s Fair Funding Reforms, which come into effect with the 2026/2027 Local Government settlement, have transformed the way councils are funded, with three-year funding providing more certainty. The settlement, which was announced in late December, has now been fully reviewed and will give Derby a 9% increase in core spending power, equating to £27.5 million, for the next financial year. This increase in core spending allows the Council to begin reinvesting back into communities, rather than making cuts to services.
The consultation is an opportunity for anyone living, working or studying in Derby to have a say about how they’d like any additional money being spent.
Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Regeneration, Strategy and Policy said:
We’re very proud to be proposing this budget which allows us to make long overdue investments back into our city. For Derby, this settlement provides the financial clarity we have long called for. It moves us beyond the era of managing decline and allows us to start a new chapter of growth.
This funding isn't just a number on a spreadsheet, it means we can better protect our most vulnerable residents, ensure that Derby is safe and welcoming to all, and continue our work to transform the city centre into a vibrant place to be.
A big thank you to our teams who have spent the past few weeks working through the settlement to understand exactly what this means for Derby, and of course to everyone who has already shared their thoughts about our proposals. We want to ensure this budget reflects the priorities of the people who live and work here, so if you haven’t already, please do take a few minutes to have your say.
Full details of the proposals and the consultation survey can be found on the Let’s Talk Derby website until midnight on Friday 16 January.
