Derby City Council will kick off the next phase of improvements on Duffield Road, aimed at boosting traffic flow and efficiency on a key city route.

Starting Monday 19 January, the upgrades are scheduled to take 22 weeks, with most work undertaken between 9:30am and 3pm, minimising the impact on road users.

During the initial eight weeks, the bus lane on Kings Street will be closed, followed by a closure of Lodge Lane between Duffield Road and Garden Street from February to June.

These enhancements are a natural progression from the successful upgrades at the Five Lamps junction on Kedleston and Duffield Roads. Both phases form part of a wider scheme, funded by the Bus Service Improvement Plan, to maximise benefits to road users in Darley Ward.

The existing, 20-year-old signals will be upgraded to new low-energy LED lamps, featuring Intelligent Transport and Bus Priority Systems. This system is designed to cut delays and emissions, while integrating with the new MOVA-controlled signals at Five Lamps, offering road users a coordinated experience along the route. Pedestrians will also enjoy enhanced service at crossing points.

Resurfacing and decluttering redundant street furniture will take place at the same time to avoid further disruption to road users in the future. There will also be improvements to pedestrian and cycle facilities, while a new right turn only lane will be added on Lodge Lane.

These works will be carried out by Whitehouse Construction, continuing the partnership that has successfully delivered Phase One.

Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport and Sustainability, said:

Reducing our city’s emissions is made much easier with a coordinated transport network. This new phase of improvements builds on the successful initiative at Five Lamps, ensuring a coordinated and efficient flow to and from the city. While these works might cause some temporary inconvenience, the long-term gains for Derby’s road users, cyclists, and pedestrians – quicker, safer, greener journeys – are invaluable.
