Major road upgrades have begun on the A514 in Chellaston.

The junction of Merrill Way, Chellaston Road and Boulton Lane will be undergoing major improvements over the next seven months, increasing capacity at the junction, and introducing new cycle lanes and crossings.

Such upgrades will improve traffic flow and bus journey times, while also boosting connectivity for active travel users on the route.

This work has benefitted from £3m of funding from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), with further financial support from the developers Infinity Park Derby LLP.

This scheme forms part of the planning conditions associated with the South Derby Growth Zone and will a deliver more efficient access route for the new development from the city.

Councillor Carmel Swan, cabinet member for climate change, transport and sustainability at Derby City Council, said:

It’s great to see work starting on another scheme to improve travel in Derby. We want to make our network more efficient and greener, and we need the right infrastructure in place to do that.

This scheme promises real benefits to the people of Derby, and I’m delighted that our desire for a greener, better-connected Derby is shared by the Mayor of the East Midlands.

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said:

Improving transport connections across Derby and our region is a key priority for me, and this investment in the A514 junction is a great example of that commitment in action.

By increasing capacity, supporting reliable public transport and making it safer and easier for people to walk and cycle, this scheme will support local growth while helping to create a more sustainable transport network for the future.
