Derby Arena’s velodrome track and infield will temporarily close for two weeks of planned maintenance to ensure the facility remains world-class for years to come.
The closure will run from Monday 10 August to Sunday 23 August, with all track and infield activities reopening on Monday 24 August. The gym, exercise studio, and reformer studio will operate as normal throughout this period.
The scheduled work follows a routine inspection by Velotrack, the track’s original constructor. Velotrack’s assessment confirmed that the velodrome remains in excellent condition and has been meticulously maintained by the Derby Arena team since its opening, with no major remedial work required to date.
To preserve the track’s long-term lifespan and maintain compliance with international standards, Velotrack will perform a comprehensive maintenance programme, including:
- Board replacement in targeted areas
- Complete surface sanding
- Full repainting to current UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) specifications
While work is in progress, the infield space must remain closed in addition to the track. No velodrome track sessions or infield sports will take place during these two weeks.
Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Streetpride, Parks and Leisure, said:
Derby Arena is home to one of the UK’s finest indoor velodromes. This planned maintenance is about looking after a key facility so that it remains safe, high quality, and enjoyable for everyone who uses it.
The inspection confirmed that the velodrome track is in very good condition. By investing in this routine work now, we are ensuring it continues to meet international standards and serves local riders and clubs well into the future.
The work has been strategically scheduled during the peak summer months when many regular cyclists take to outdoor tracks and several indoor sporting groups take a seasonal break.
Ahead of the closure, cyclists can take advantage of a special offer throughout July: book onto any track cycling taster session and bring a friend free of charge.
For community members seeking alternative court sports during the two-week closure, activities such as badminton, pickleball, and table tennis will be available at Springwood Leisure Centre.
Customers with any questions or enquiry regarding bookings are encouraged to speak directly with the Derby Arena reception team or email the Arena team.
