Residents who help care for a family member, friend or neighbour are invited to attend Derby City Carers Week’s free information and advice event at Derby Market Hall on Tuesday 9 June from 11am to 3pm.
The event, which has been organised by the Derby City Council Neighbourhoods team, aims to raise awareness of unpaid carers across the city and connect people with the support, advice and services available to them. More than 50 organisations and services will be attending, alongside presentations, information stalls and support for a range of caring responsibilities.
The event is open to anyone who helps support someone who could not manage without their assistance, whether due to illness, disability, mental health issues or addiction. Many people do not realise they are carers and may be missing out on valuable advice and support.
Councillor Sarah Chambers, Cabinet Member for Cost of Living, Equalities and Communities, said:
This event is an important opportunity to recognise the vital contribution unpaid carers make to families and communities across Derby every day.
Many carers do not always see themselves as carers, so events like this help people discover the support, advice and services available to them. We want carers to know they are not alone and that help is available to support their wellbeing, finances and caring responsibilities.”
The event forms part of Carers Week, a national annual campaign that celebrates and recognises the contribution of unpaid carers, raises awareness of the challenges they face and helps connect carers with support and advice. This year's theme, Building Carer Friendly Communities, highlights the importance of creating places, services and organisations where unpaid carers are recognised, understood and valued.
British Sign Language interpretation and translations in multiple languages will also be available to help make the event accessible to more residents.
