Mackworth Library will close temporarily on Thursday 30 July for essential roof repairs.
Because these vital works will affect the interior of the building, it is not possible to keep the library open safely while construction is underway. The building will reopen later in the year.
While the library is closed, the Council will take the opportunity to carry out additional work to improve the library experience for users. A brand-new, dedicated space for children will be created, the library’s public computers will be replaced, and the interior will be repainted to make the space fresh and welcoming.
Furthermore, once the library reopens, opening hours will be extended to include Saturday mornings to make it easier for families to visit.
Councillor Sarah Chambers, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Equality and Public Safety, said:
It’s unavoidable that Mackworth Library must close temporarily for these essential roof repairs, and we appreciate the community’s understanding and patience while the works are completed.
We’re making the most of this time to upgrade the interior for the local community. Visitors can look forward to a vibrant, fresh look, with new public computers and a wonderful new space for children.
Any books currently on loan from Mackworth Library will be automatically renewed so members will not face any late fees. Items can also be dropped them off at any other Derby Library site.
All other branches across the city remain open as usual. Locations and opening times are available on the Derby Libraries website. You can also continue to access the eLibrary on the website 24/7 to borrow eBooks and audiobooks.
The library will close at 1pm on Thursday 30 July. Future updates will be shared via the Derby Libraries Facebook page and sent directly via email to customers with an email address on file.
