Derby LIVE and Derby Parks are gearing up for the return of the popular Outdoor Theatre and Cinema Season at Markeaton Park Craft Village this July and August.
Set against the backdrop of Derby’s largest and most historic park, the season offers a uniquely relaxed environment where audiences can soak up the open-air atmosphere. From interactive puppetry and dramatic theatre to classic films under the stars on a giant inflatable cinema screen, this year's events promise a memorable summer experience in beautiful surroundings.
The season features an array of entertainment, starting with family-friendly puppet shows from Pop Up Theatre – Under the Sea Stories on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 July. Audiences can then enjoy Shakespearean drama with Julius Caesar from Wednesday 15 to Saturday 18 July, followed by a comedic take on Romeo and Juliet from Wednesday 22 to Friday 24 July. The season wraps up with evening screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Friday 31 July and Dirty Dancing on Saturday 1 August.
To help audiences get the most out of their experience, here’s a handy guide on what to expect during this summer’s run of live theatre and classic films.
Weather and Comfort
As these are outdoor events, performances will go ahead in rainy weather and are only cancelled in extreme conditions like high winds. Attendees are advised to dress for the unpredictable British weather, bring warm layers for the cooler evenings, and pack a torch. Waterproof gear is recommended if rain is forecast, but visitors are asked to leave umbrellas at home so they do not block the view of others.
The Craft Village area is hard-standing, so guests should bring their own low-backed chairs, though tables are not permitted. For Julius Caesar, attendees also have the option to purchase unreserved tiered seating in advance.
Food and Drink
While audiences are welcome to bring a picnic, the Orangery café and Courtyard will be open serving coffees, cakes, ice cream, and cold drinks. A licensed bar will be available during Julius Caesar, while a selection of alcoholic drinks, snacks, and popcorn will be on sale for Romeo and Juliet, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Dirty Dancing.
Access and Parking
The event site is fully accessible. Pay-and-display parking is available at the Markeaton Park Craft Village car park (via Markeaton Lane, DE22 3BG), which will remain open and lit until the end of the evening performances. Disabled parking spaces are situated close to the gates.
Site rules
To ensure a safe and comfortable environment for everyone, barbecues, fireworks, and bonfires are strictly prohibited. Smoking and the use of e-cigarettes are also not permitted within the enclosed Craft Village area. Additionally, dogs are not allowed on site, with the exception of assistance dogs.
