Derby City Council is planning a programme of essential maintenance and improvement works to keep school buildings safe, warm and in good condition for pupils and staff.
The proposed 2026/27 Schools Capital Programme will focus on the most urgent building condition and health and safety needs across Council-maintained schools.
The Council is awaiting confirmation of Derby’s school condition allocation for 2026/27 from the Department for Education (DfE). Therefore the plans are based on a projected allocation of £2.5 million. This approach allows the Council to forward plan the works for delivery during the school summer holidays, to minimise disruption to learning.
The proposed programme gives priority to schools with the highest level of need and focuses on three key areas of building condition – electrical rewiring, roofing and window replacement.
Councillor Paul Hezelgrave, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Skills, said:
We are committed to ensuring Derby’s children learn in buildings that are safe, warm and fit for the future. By planning this programme now, based on the funding we expect to receive, we can line up essential works for the summer holidays and minimise disruption to lessons.
This investment focuses on the schools with the greatest need, tackling issues with roofs, windows and electrical systems so we can keep classrooms open and improve conditions for children and staff.
Among the schemes proposed for 2026/27 are:
- Littleover Community School – Works including a new weather-tight roof covering and additional insulation for one of the main classroom wings
- Oakwood Infant and Nursery School – Roofing works including replacement roof over the hall and new windows and rooflights
- Shelton Infant School – Roofing and window works including replacement of windows in the main classroom wing and roofing works.
These projects are part of a wider programme designed to address a backlog of building condition issues across Derby’s maintained schools.
The Schools Capital Programme for 2026/27 is subject to approval by Cabinet members during their meeting on Wednesday 8 April. The papers are available on the Derby City Council Democracy Portal.
