Funded through a substantial £161 million investment from the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund, this joint initiative with Nottingham City Councils has led to significant improvements in local transport infrastructure, emphasising sustainable travel solutions.

Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport, and Sustainability, said:

The Transforming Cities scheme has delivered positive change for Derby's transport landscape, prioritising sustainability and the health of residents and visitors. It's now easier than ever for Derby’s citizens to opt for eco-friendly travel, propelling us toward achieving our green goals.

Active travel was at the heart of the changes, with new cycle lanes, wider footpaths, and improved pedestrian crossings installed at most locations, making walking and cycling a more attractive option. Those travelling by bus will see the benefits of new stops and bus priority measures at various locations.

This initiative is not just about reducing congestion and carbon emissions; it's about enhancing the daily lives and health of Derby's residents and visitors. Cleaner air and less traffic stand to benefit everyone, making our city a more appealing place to live and work.

An extensive greening programme was also part of the scheme, creating a more vibrant feel for the city. This includes new planters and ‘living roof’ bus stops. Many of these planters have incorporated benches, giving visitors a place to sit and enjoy the city centre.
