We run six cemeteries in Derby city:

Cemetery grounds opening times
All cemetery grounds are open every day including bank holidays.
- April to October - 9am to 7.30pm
- November to March - 9am to 4.30pm
Burial times
Burials times are available between 9am and 3pm at Nottingham Road Cemetery, other city cemeteries last burial time is 2pm.
Last burial time during winter months is one hour earlier.
Do I need to book a burial of ashes into a grave at a Derby cemetery?
An appointment is required to bury ashes into a family grave or cremation plot. The owner of the grave (deed holder) must give permission.

Who do I speak to about grass cutting or overgrown bushes and trees at a cemetery?

Nottingham Road Cemetery
Our Cemeteries Office at Nottingham Road Cemetery is open by appointment only. For enquiries or to make an appointment email bereavement@derby.gov.uk or call 01332 640050.
Nottingham Road Cemetery facilities
- Burials in new and re-opened graves.
- Lawn, traditional and natural graves.
- Muslim vaults.
- Garden of Remembrance for cremated remains.
- Chapel for burial or memorial services which seats 75 people.
- Assistance dogs are allowed within the cemetery grounds, please ensure any fouling is bagged and disposed of in one of the many bins provided around the site.

Toilet facilities
Public toilets are available including a disabled toilet. The toilets are open during working hours only. The disabled toilet is accessible out of hours with a radar key.
There are currently no baby changing facilities at the cemetery.
Car parking
There is a car park available at Nottingham Road Cemetery.
No motor vehicles are allowed within the cemeteries unless they are carrying a Blue Badge holder and not exceeding 10mph.
Please do not park on the grass and be respectful of funerals within the grounds.
Floral tributes
Floral tributes are removed from graves when they have passed their best.
We encourage families to remove their own tributes and ask that they are disposed of in the bins provided.
Christmas wreaths are NOT removed by the council.
Muslim burial
An out-of-hours service is available for burial into a Muslim vault. Please contact your local mosque for more information.

How to purchase a grave
To purchase a grave at time of need, arrangements will be made through your chosen Funeral Director.
To pre purchase a grave in advance of use please contact the Bereavement Office, email bereavement@derby.gov.uk or telephone 01332 640050.
Please note: pre purchased graves require pre dig at time of purchase, a further interment charge will apply at time of use.
Grave deed
The grave needs to be officially numbered and checked prior to the deed being produced, this can take up to six weeks, if you are concerned please contact the Bereavement Office.
How do I change the ownership of a grave?
To change the ownership of a grave please contact the Bereavement Office for the correct change of ownership documents. Email bereavement@derby.gov.uk or telephone 01332 640050.
Memorials within cemeteries
The following procedures apply to memorials:
- Memorial regulations are provided with grave deeds following each burial. Further copies are available on request from the Bereavement Office.
- Memorials must be fitted by a BRAMM approved memorial mason.
- Memorials remain the responsibility of the registered deed holder.
- Memorial objects exceeding the regulation garden area on the lawn grave section will be removed without prior notice.
- Glass objects within the cemetery grounds will be removed without prior notice.
What size memorial can I have at the cemetery?
You will receive a copy of the regulations for your grave with your grave deed. If you require a further copy please contact the Bereavement Office, email bereavement@derby.gov.uk or telephone 01332 640050.
Can I put a fence around my grave?
If your family grave is a lawn grave, you are allowed an 18 inch garden area in front of the concrete memorial plinth.
If your family grave is a traditional grave you can fence off the whole grave area.
Where can I buy a memorial for the cemetery?
Cemetery memorials are provided by a memorial Mason, they must be BRAMM registered. You can find a local memorial mason online.
Christmas wreaths
Christmas wreaths and memorabilia are not removed from the grounds by cemetery staff.
The Bereavement Office
Our Bereavement Services can be contacted by telephone, 01332 640050 or email bereavement@derby.gov.uk.
The Bereavement Office hours are Monday to Friday, from 8.30am to 4pm.
The office is situated within the Markeaton Cremetorium grounds, Markeaton Lane, Derby, DE22 4NH. Adjacent to the exit gate, it is signposted within the grounds.
Can I organise the funeral myself?
We advise using a Funeral Director though we understand some people may wish to make their own arrangements. Our Bereavement staff will guide you through the process and assist with arrangements.
Payments
Bereavement Services is not currently able to take payments online. However, payment can be made over the telephone with a debit or credit card. Payment can also be made in person with a debit card, credit card or cash, at the Bereavement Office at Markeaton Crematorium.

To locate where a loved one is buried at a Derby cemetery, it is recommended to view online.
If you are unable to locate your loved one online, please contact the Bereavement Office with their full name and date of death.

Burial records are available through the Church Warden, they are not held by the Council.
