Polling stations

Where’s my polling station?

There are 87 polling (voting) stations within the Derby city boundary. They are usually based in convenient locations, such as schools, community centres and other public buildings.

Polling stations are staffed by presiding officers and polling clerks to make sure that proceedings run smoothly and legally.

During elections, we send people who are registered to vote (and have not applied to vote by post) a polling card that shows the local polling station to which they will need to go to vote. Polling hours are 7am to 10pm.

There are two changes to polling stations since the last elections. To find a polling district or polling station, please view our online mapping page, visit Where Do I Vote's website, or check our list of polling stations‌.

What happens at polling stations?

You don’t have to take your polling card to the polling station when you go to vote, but it will help. If you don’t have your polling card, the polling clerks will ask for your name and address so they can check you are on the electoral register before they give you your ballot paper.

How do I use my ballot paper?

The ballot paper for the referendum asks:

Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?

You should vote only once marking a cross against your preferred choice which will be either to Remain a member of the European Union, or, Leave the European Union. Each ballot paper will have an official mark in the top right corner on the front, plus a number and unique identifying mark on the back.

When you have your ballot paper, go to a polling booth so that no one can see how you vote. You will be asked to put one cross (X) in the box next to your choice. There will be instructions inside the polling booth telling you how to vote and how to mark your ballot paper.

Do not write anything else on the ballot paper or your vote might not be counted.

Fold the ballot paper in half and put it in the marked ballot box. If you are not sure what to do, ask the polling clerks for help. Do not let anyone see your vote.
