Mayor of Derby
The Mayor of the City of Derby is Councillor Ajit Singh Atwal.
Ajit is instinctively sociable and a genuine ‘people person’. He has an enormous number of people whom he counts as friends and his acquaintances are countless. He mixes in many different circles both professional and social. As well as his numerous business commitments he is also generous with his free time, particularly for young people in the community. He believes passionately in the power of sport to be a force for good. He is CEO of Atwal Car and Van Hire.
Ajit was born and bred in Derby and is well known throughout his community and across the city. He was first elected in 2010 and again in 2019. He is married to Kully and has three sons, of whom they are extremely proud. He is a fervent ambassador for the city and will support the Office of the Mayor in any way he can.
Deputy Mayor
The Deputy Mayor is Councillor Philip Ingall.
Born and raised in Derby, Philip Ingall spent his early childhood in Breaston and was educated at Fairfield and Western Mere schools. His career took him into the automotive industry, where he worked for many years at Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Burnaston. Now retired, his practical, grounded experience in a major local employer has shaped his understanding of working families and the economic challenges facing local communities.
He lives in the heart of the Chellaston and Shelton Lock ward he serves, along with Celia his wife who is also a Councillor. They have four children and are very proud grandparents. He is known for his down-to-earth manner, approachability, and deep commitment to local people. Despite their busy schedule, he makes every effort to spend time with his family, who are a central part of his life.
Philip first entered local politics in 2006 and has been a dedicated and long-serving public servant. He currently represents the Chellaston and Shelton Lock ward where he also lives. In partnership with his wife Celia, they have become a well-recognised team in the community, championing local causes, addressing residents’ concerns, and working to improve neighbourhood services and quality of life.
As a husband-and-wife duo, he and Celia are very proud to serve the Office of the Mayor of Derby, as Deputy Mayor and Mayoress for 2025 to 2026.
