Bulky waste

Overview

Bulky waste is large household items that cannot fit in a normal bin, such as sofas, mattresses or fridges.

Before arranging a collection, residents are encouraged to sell, donate or reuse items wherever possible. Local charities like Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance Furniture and Electrical Project, are looking for tables, fridges, freezers, washing machines and more essential items to give to local families in the community. Alternatively, items can be taken to Raynesway HWRC for recycling or donated to the Raynesway Reuse shop.

Where reuse is not an option, we provide a bulky waste collection service for households. This is a safe, affordable and environmentally responsible way to dispose of large items.

How it works: Check, book, remove

The bulky waste service is designed to be straightforward:

  • Check – check the list of items that can be collected.
  • Book – arrange and pay for a collection online or by phone.
  • Remove – place items at the front of the property by 6:30am on the collection day.

What can be collected (and charges)

The service covers most large household items, including:

  • sofas, armchairs and dining chairs
  • mattresses and bed bases
  • wardrobes, tables and other large furniture
  • fridges and freezers
  • mats or rugs (not fitted)
  • large toys, prams, bikes and similar household items
  • smaller household waste in black sacks.

Each large item is considered and charged as a single item, for example:

  • A table = one item
  • A sofa = one item
  • An armchair = one item
  • A mattress = one item
  • Three black sacks of household waste = one item

Charges:

  • One - three items: £37.72
  • Four items: £44.36
  • Five items: £50.44
  • Six items: £55.62
  • Fridges/freezers: +£13.91 each

Charges are for each collection, not for each item, and cover the costs of safe transport and responsible disposal.

If you have more than six items, you can book an additional collection.

Items not collected

Certain items cannot be collected as bulky waste, including:

  • building rubble, soil, turf, asbestos or plasterboard
  • carpets or underlay
  • bathroom suites, kitchen units or large fixtures
  • garden sheds, greenhouses or fence panels
  • pianos and other very large or heavy items
  • vehicle parts, tyres, or engines
  • clinical waste, chemicals or hazardous materials.

Alternatives:

  • Raynesway Household Waste and Recycling Centre – for DIY and household waste (booking required).
  • You can hire a licensed waste carrier or skip. Check a public register of waste carriers on the Environment Agency website.

Why choose bulky waste collections?

This service provides clear benefits for residents and the wider community:

  • Convenient – no need to transport heavy or awkward items yourself.
  • Cost-effective – transparent charges and no hidden extras.
  • Responsible – collections are carried out through a regulated service, reducing the risk of fly-tipping.
  • Sustainable – wherever possible, collected items are reused or recycled, supporting Derby’s environmental goals.

By using the service, residents help ensure bulky items are managed safely, responsibly, and in a way that benefits the community.

On the day of collection

To ensure items are collected:

  • Have them ready by 6:30am on the booked day. An exact time of collection can’t be provided.
  • Place them at the front of the property, in one location, where crews can easily access them (unless otherwise agreed by waste management).
  • Bag or box smaller items so they can be lifted safely.

Crews may use more than one vehicle, as some items are taken directly for recycling.

Please remember:

  • Items not correctly presented as instructed will not be collected, and refunds cannot be given.
  • Items not listed in your booking, waterlogged or overly heavy will not be collected, and refunds cannot be given.
