Before you visit

Raynesway Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) is Derby’s main site for residents to recycle and dispose of household waste safely and responsibly.

The site is for Derby and Derbyshire residents using a private vehicle and can be visited up to 12 times a year. Proof of address may be required.

No business waste

Raynesway cannot be used by traders or businesses, or for waste created by a business working at your home, for example, leftover building materials.

Booking a visit

All visits from Monday to Saturday must be booked in advance. This helps manage traffic, reduce queuing, and keep the site safe. Sundays are open without booking.

Reduce, reuse, sell, donate

Local charities like Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance Furniture and Electrical Project, community groups, and the Reuse Raynesway shop can take items that still have life left in them - helping to cut waste and benefit the community. Repair may also be a great option to extend product life.

Retailers take-back

If you’re buying large items such as fridges or freezers, ask the retailer if they’ll take away your old item when they deliver the new one. Due to lack of fridge/freezer recycling capacity nationally, we encourage residents to use this option where possible to reduce pressure on local HWRCs. Many large retailers also accept old electricals back in store or collect them on delivery for recycling.

Bulky waste collection

If reuse isn’t possible and you can’t transport large items yourself, we offer a competitively priced bulky waste collection. This ensures items are properly managed and supports local services.

What you can bring

Raynesway HWRC accepts most household waste and recycling. Please sort items before you arrive and place them in the correct bays, following staff instructions. Once deposited, items cannot be taken away. Staff are available to help if needed.

Household recycling

• Paper and cardboard.
• Glass bottles and jars - rinsed, lids removed.
• Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays.
• Food and drink cans, tins and foils.
• Textiles and paired shoes.

Garden waste

• Grass cuttings and leaves.
• Hedge clippings and prunings.
• Plants, flowers, small branches and twigs.

General household items

• Bulky furniture - beds, sofas, wardrobes, tables, chairs.
• Mattresses.
• Carpets - small, rolled sections.
• Bicycles, prams and large toys.
• Electrical items - fridges, TVs, toasters, kettles, hairdryers. Due to a lack of fridge/freezer recycling capacity nationally, residents can only drop off one cooling device (either a fridge, freezer or fridge freezer) per visit to the HWRC.

DIY waste

• Limited amounts of DIY waste from minor home improvements and repairs, see Limits on DIY waste.

Household hazardous items (domestic quantities only)

• Paint (empty and sealed tins)
• Household and car batteries.
• Fluorescent tubes and low-energy bulbs.
• Small amounts of asbestos and domestic chemicals, see Asbestos and chemicals for limits.
• Pet litter - 2 bag limit. Please notify staff of bag contents to limit contact with material and be directed to the correct skip.

Gas cylinders and fire extinguishers – what is accepted 

• Unbranded caravan or boat cylinders: up to 2 per calendar year. Branded cylinders for example, Calor, must be returned to their stockists.
• Domestic fire extinguishers for household use: maximum size 2kg, up to 2 per calendar year
• Camping gas stove cylinders: up to 4. If possible, attach to the stove and burn off any residual contents before bringing
• Party balloon inflation cylinders: household quantities accepted.

What you cannot bring

Some items cannot be accepted at Raynesway HWRC due to safety, environmental, or legal restrictions. Please review the list before visiting.

Not accepted at Raynesway HWRC

• Business or trade waste – including waste from tradespeople working at your home. The site is strictly for domestic household use.
• Clinical waste – medical sharps, dressings or contaminated materials.
• Scrap vehicles or parts, including trailers.
• Waste from building demolition, extensions or construction, including wooden garden structures like sheds, playhouses, fencing or decking.
• Ammunition or explosives - HWRCs are not licensed to accept these, contact your local police station for advice.
• Volumes of waste unlikely to have been generated by a private household. Those making excessive visits with non-domestic volumes of waste, will be challenged and may be turned away from the site.

Gas cylinders and fire extinguishers – not accepted

• Branded gas cylinders for example Calor, Flogas, BP, Shell, Camping Gaz – these remain the property of the company and must be returned to them or their authorised agents. Visit Liquid Gas for disposal information.
• Industrial cylinders – including welding gases and large CO2 bottles used in pubs or catering.
• Medical oxygen cylinders – return through your healthcare provider or the gas supplier.
• Large or non-domestic fire extinguishers – these must be disposed of with specialist contractors.
• We accept limited amounts of certain domestic gas cylinders (see What you can bring). Anything outside those limits will be refused at the site.

Rules, vehicles and safety

Raynesway HWRC has rules in place to keep the site safe and fair for all users. Please read these carefully before your visit.

Site rules

• Booking is required Monday to Saturday (please bring your booking confirmation).
• The site is for household waste only – no commercial or trade waste.
• Follow all instructions given by site staff.
• Children and pets must always stay inside vehicles.
• Items cannot be removed once they have been placed in the site’s recycling bays.
• Treat the team with respect. Aggressive or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated.

Vehicles

• Cars and small vans can access the site.
• Vans and pick-up trucks must be under 3.5 tonnes and only domestic type trailers which are less than 2m long will be accepted. Larger vehicles or trailers are not permitted on site.
• Vehicles over 2 metres in height or with commercial branding may be refused entry.
• Cyclist access is allowed:
  • Please take appropriate safety measures such as cycle helmets and lights.
  • You do not need to pre-book the visit, but you need to queue just like any other vehicle.
  • Cycles must not be ridden on site, so please get off and push.
  • Follow the direction of the recycling advisor at the meet and greet cabin to deposit your items and exit the HWRC without accessing the main site. Staff will move your recycling to the appropriate area.

Safety on site

• Pedestrian access is not allowed.
• Drive slowly and follow the one-way system.
• Park only in the marked bays.
• Wear suitable footwear, clothing and gloves - most accidents happen because people injure themselves on their own waste.
• Take care when lifting or carrying heavy items – staff may provide guidance and assistance to those who need it.
• Take waste directly to skips/containers - do not unload onto the walkways.
• Smoking and vaping are not permitted anywhere on site.
• Do not remove cones or barriers to get to skips.

Breaking site rules or safety requirements may result in access being withdrawn.

Booking and access

From Monday to Saturday all visits to Raynesway HWRC must be pre-booked. Without a booking you will be turned away.

However, Sunday visits do not require a booking - you can simply arrive within opening hours. However, it is likely that you will experience queues.

A maximum of 12 visits per household per year (January to December) is allowed, and that is managed through the free MiPermit system.

The system reduces queues and ensures fair access.

Sunday visits 

• No booking required - you can just turn up.
• Busy hours are 10:30am to 4pm - try to visit before or after to avoid queues.
• Sorting your waste before arrival speeds up your visit.
• Staff can help if needed.

Managing visits and your allocation

• You can book multiple visits in one day - but each count toward your annual 12-visit limit. 
• You must use the same vehicle registered for your booking - otherwise, access may be refused. 
• Unused visits do not roll over to the next year. The allowance resets on 1 January. 

If you move property, you should notify us so we can update your address. Your visit count will transfer, and the counter will reset on the 1 January. If the previous occupants used permits at that address and do not update their account, their bookings may also count towards the 12. If you reach 12 visits before you expect to, please contact us so we can update any accounts at the property that are no longer valid. 

Limits on DIY waste

Residents can dispose of small amounts of DIY waste generated by minor home improvements and repairs - but these must stay within specific limits.

What's allowed in a single visit

You may dispose of up to 100kg of the following: concrete, cement, mortar, rubble, soil or turf, for example, four 25kg sacks.

And one of the following:

• 1-2 items from a bathroom suite
• 1–2 window frames or doors with or without glass
• Small amounts of plasterboard or plasterboard products (not whole sheets)
• Small amounts of wood or reconstituted wood from minor domestic repairs (if your wood is fence panels, we will only accept up to 2 damaged panels)
• Carpet (from one room only)

Returning to site

If you reach these maximum amounts, you will need to book a return visit.

Construction and demolition waste

We cannot accept waste arising from the construction or demolition of garden structures (such as sheds, playhouses, fencing or decking), or home fixtures and fittings (for example, kitchen units, fitted wardrobes and whole bathroom suites).

For major works

For major home and garden refurbishments or large-scale clearances:

• hiring a skip, or similar is often the most suitable option
• engage the services of a waste removal company - consider getting a quote from our commercial team.

You must ensure your chosen waste operator is licensed – check their waste carriers licence number against the Environment Agency website.

If your waste is fly-tipped, you could face prosecution.

Asbestos and chemicals

Raynesway HWRC can accept very limited amounts of asbestos and certain household chemicals.

Strict rules apply so we can manage this waste safely. Residents bringing asbestos or chemicals must inform staff on arrival.

Asbestos

• We accept small amounts of bonded asbestos from minor repairs to roofs and guttering, for example.
• Maximum: up to 3 sheets/panels per calendar year.
• Dampen the asbestos before lifting or moving it to help prevent the release of fibres.
• Do not break up or cut the asbestos to fit in plastic bags. Instead, double-wrap sheets/panels in plastic sheeting or bags and securely tape.
• Loose asbestos fibres, large amounts, or asbestos from businesses are not accepted.

For larger amounts, or other asbestos types, you must use a specialist licensed contractor.

Household chemicals

• Small amounts of domestic chemicals are accepted, including:
  • a maximum of 5 litres or 5 kilograms of hazardous waste, such as pesticides, oils including cooking oil, mercury and petrol
  • a maximum of 10 litres of engine oil
