Flats and shared houses (HMOs)
If you live in a shared property, you're all jointly responsible for managing waste properly. That means talking to your housemates about what goes in each bin and how to recycle correctly.
Everyone needs to be on the same page - it’s the best way to avoid confusion and potential enforcement action that can affect all of you.
Most shared homes have a bin storage area within the property boundary. If access is suitable, our crews will return bins there after collection. If not, it’s up to the residents to put bins out and bring them back in.
Under the Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) Regulations, landlords are legally required to provide bins and keep them in good repair. Tenants also have legal duties - including storing and disposing of waste correctly.
Breaches can result in formal action and considerable financial penalties, so it’s important for everyone to play their part.
All occupants are equally responsible, so working together is key.
If you are having trouble accessing the bin area, please speak to your landlord or managing agent.
If there’s no bin storage space at your property, contact us and we may be able to advise.
