Electricals
Electrical waste is one of the UK’s fastest-growing waste streams. From phones and laptops to kettles and toys, we upgrade or replace them more often than ever. But producing and disposing of these items uses huge amounts of energy, metals, plastics and rare materials - many of which can be reused or recycled.
Reducing how many electricals we throw away saves money, protects resources, and helps cut waste.
Reduce and reuse first
- Buy smarter – choose durable products, repairable designs, or refurbished tech instead of always buying new.
- Sell unwanted items – list them on sites like eBay, Vinted or Gumtree, or trade them in through retailer schemes.
- Repair instead of replacing – visit a local repair café or use free online guides to fix common problems.
- Donate in working order – pass on electricals through charity shops, community projects, or our Reuse Raynesway shop, where items are tested and sold on at affordable prices.
If reuse isn’t possible
When items can’t be reused:
- Small items such as kettles, toasters, hairdryers, toys: book a visit to Raynesway HWRC or use supermarket drop-off points.
- Large items such as TVs, fridges, freezers: book a visit to Raynesway HWRC or book a bulky waste collection.
Retailers take-back – many stores, such as Currys, accept old technology for recycling even if you didn’t buy from them, sometimes offering money off new purchases.
