Temporary footbridge - Walter's Walkway

Following an assessment of the existing Darley Mills Bridge Derby City Council stepped in to prevent access onto the Mills Bridge in May 2022.

In October 2022 we installed Walter’s Walkway footbridge above the existing bridge, to reconnect an important link over the river for the local businesses and the community. In September 2023 the Council Cabinet agreed to purchase Walter’s Walkway to secure the link for the medium term.  

We are now exploring options to install a permanent replacement. This will take several years because of the complexity of the location and because there is, at present, no funding available. A new bridge could cost up to £20 million to construct.    

In the meantime, pedestrians and wheeled users can use Walter’s Walkway to access the vibrant businesses in the mills complex, link up with communities either side of the river and complete the leisure route around Darley Park.
